The restoration and repurposing of listed buildings are always sensitive matters. Both the physical and social history must remain tangible, but the new use must also be given its rightful place. Such a design exercise requires great sensitivity. It is not about creating a pretty picture, but about the details. There are no standard solutions here. Unfortunately, the restoration of the ‘Hoge Mote’ in Ronse has wiped away all historical layers beneath paint and plaster.

The Hoge Mote lies just outside the oldest town centre of Ronse, close to the largely covered Molenbeek. This slightly elevated site, surrounded by a ring of canals, was once a defensive post. Little remains of those origins. In the 17th century, a spacious residence was built there, which was soon occupied by clergy. A bridge and a gatehouse connected this artificial island to the town.
