Volt Architects transformed a former gingerbread factory in a compact inner-city area of Sint-Niklaas into a drop-in and shelter centre for the homeless. Volt Architects retained the structure of the warehouses and factory buildings whilst bringing in light and open space. This created a living environment with an industrial character and a village-like atmosphere.

The Centre for General Welfare Work (CAW) East Flanders was established in 2014 following a merger of various local organisations, and its mission is to improve the well-being of the residents of the province of East Flanders. The focus of its work is on helping vulnerable groups in society. De Biekens houses seventeen studio flats for people experiencing homelessness (including one for larger families and one for people with disabilities), two rooms for emergency accommodation, offices, consultation rooms, a relaxation room, a shower room, a laundry room and a communal area. On the street side is the accessible drop-in centre Den Durpel.
