Following an open call for tenders, NU architectuuratelier was commissioned to carry out the extension of Huis Perrekes, a place for people with dementia, their families and friends, as well as for the local community. After an intensive process, NU succeeded in developing a design that reflects the philosophy of the home. Within a year, the doctor’s villa, an annexe, the garden and the garden pavilion were completed, with everything centred on meeting and connecting.

“A house as ordinary as possible in an ordinary street in an ordinary village”: this is how Huis Perrekes describes its guiding principle for enabling small-scale, normalised living for people with dementia. Originally, the masterplan stipulated that Huis Perrekes would expand the existing site. When the doctor’s villa across the street was unexpectedly put up for sale, all parties recognised the property – which occupies a central position in Oosterloo, both physically and mentally – as the ideal location.
