Madam is the name Door Smits and Marit Meganck chose for the architectural practice they founded in 2014. Over the course of four years, they have built up a portfolio of projects on a variety of scales. On 17 October, Madam architectuur will give an Across lecture in Liège, with an introduction by Jörn Bihain (V+).

Madam’s office is based in Brussels, in a block of flats which the duo designed the renovation for themselves. Every design is based on its surroundings: “We look for a rational framework based on the context and the brief. This could be a grid, for example, something that frames the space,” explains Door Smits. Building on this rational foundation, madam creates a fascinating sequence of spaces, each with its own specific atmosphere, play of light, rhythm or views.
