At the Avonturenberg in Beringen, you don’t just climb and scramble your way to the top; you also descend, in a playful way, into the region’s mining history. The play landscape – designed by Omgeving and Carve on what was once a mountain of rubble – may even offer a glimpse into the future.
Children clambering up a slag heap, all the way to the top, and sliding back down again. A place full of adventure. These are the discoveries and games that Paul Meyer captured in his film “Déjà s’envole la fleur maigre”. The Avonturenberg in Beringen – designed by the Antwerp-based firm Omgeving, in collaboration with the Dutch engineers at Carve – is built to the scale of the slag heap and is a playscape. The park forms part of a wider programme of projects aimed at restoring Beringen’s mining heritage to its former glory (be-Mine). Within the framework of these initiatives, the Avonturenberg questions the future of our industrial landscapes and is committed to formulating a response.
