Folding: an aesthetic gesture, but also a practical one. By employing this technique for a residential block in Namur, Specimen ingeniously makes the most of the confined space of a plot and a street.

Alongside ‘squeezing, sealing […], throwing, sticking, wrapping, amalgamating, digging, extruding’, the verb ‘to fold’ (Rem Koolhaas, ‘Junkspace’, in *Mutations*, Barcelona–Bordeaux: Éditions Actar, 2002, p. 744) is now part of the repertoire of operations that can give shape to a project. For better or for worse – from concept buildings that are indifferent to both the city and its inhabitants to the opening up of unexplored potential for uses and spatial experiences. For a block of flats situated a stone’s throw from Namur station, the architects at Specimen decided to ‘fold’ the main façade, drawing broken lines on the floor plan for each storey.
