CENTRAL, in collaboration with the Paris-based firm NP2F, has won the competition for the extension of the Victoria Sports Centre in Koekelberg. The proposal won over the jury thanks to its harmonious relationship with the existing structures and its honest approach to issues of inclusivity at every level. From a structural perspective, it emphasises a flexible framework that echoes Italian palaces: those that stand the test of time without ageing, where the needs of each generation find their place.

The site, shaped by successive interventions lacking cohesion, is seen as an opportunity for clarification with an urban responsibility across multiple scales. The proposed design aims to be forward-looking; it does not merely meet current programmatic expectations but seeks to anticipate as yet unknown future needs. The use of lightweight structures to infill a durable framework promotes its evolution and flexibility.

The building is designed as a double-height concrete slab. Beneath it, a lightweight steel structure defines a covered outdoor space and addresses the project’s logistical and accessibility requirements. Above, a timber structure houses the sports hall, the cafeteria and a large terrace allowing for outdoor sporting activities with views over the city.
The floors of the existing hall are literally extended into the new section. Thus, circulation routes are horizontal and continuous. At the junction of the old and new halls lies the main entrance, which serves the entire complex. On the upper floors, it is communal spaces that can be intelligently shared—such as the cafeteria or changing rooms—that form the link.

The jury commends the new urban connections created by the project, as well as its relationship with the park. It extends beneath the building in a subtle dialogue with the surrounding landscape. This has become one of the project’s strengths, which won over the jury and saw it outperform the proposals from the other candidates, submitted by the teams at Architectuuratelier Ambiorix, B-architecten, BEL Architecten and Trait AAA.
