With ‘Back to School’, the Flemish Architecture Institute looks back at the recent wave of new or refurbished school buildings. Curators Sofie De Caigny and Bart Tritsmans have selected representative examples which, taken together, provide an overview of successful responses to recent trends in school construction. The exhibition opens on 24 October at the Singel; prior to this, an accompanying symposium will take place, asking whether the completed schools are also ready for the future.

Over the past ten years, an increasing number of schools have been built in Flanders and Brussels, partly thanks to the Flemish Government’s ‘Scholen vanmorgen’ project. But are these recently completed schools – both as educational projects and as buildings – capable of withstanding the challenges of the future? With a selection of best practices, the curators of the retrospective exhibition ‘Back to School’ aim to address this question.
