Along the canal in Anderlecht (Brussels), a rapidly changing environment known for its manufacturing industry, Atama and V+ integrated the new building of the Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound (RITC) into the existing buildings of the Erasmus College. The added volume is conceived of as a production house for culture: making art becomes part of the productive landscape.
The programme for the new campus consists primarily of a theatre hall and film studio, which form the productive heart of the curriculum. These functions are located some distance from the existing college buildings and are distinguished by striking roof shapes: ‘a juxtaposition of archetypal roof lines that can be associated with film, theatre and production’, according to Bram Aerts (Atama). The typical curvature of an American film studio, an industrial gable roof and a theatre tower are placed next to each other. The whole forms a legible volume along the water and sits on an urban axis that includes the nearby slaughterhouse site, which is currently undergoing rapid development. In this way, the design aims to respond to the future of its surroundings.
