Wedged between a railway line, a busy approach road and parking lots of supermarkets lies a small oasis for nine families. Architect Wim Depuydt shows with dsDS how collectivity can offer a qualitative solution to the housing issue in a neglected urban area.
In 2008 the Ghent diocese put the school buildings on the Dendermondsesteenweg up for sale. The complex consists of several buildings that vary in age and style. Lessons could no longer take place on site because of a problem with fire safety. Architect Wim Depuydt, his girlfriend and another couple were immediately drawn by the charm of the place. After signing the preliminary sales agreement, they were given the time to look for other interested parties – and to prepare a concrete project.
