By 2024, the Grand-Place in Sint-Niklaas will have been completely transformed. Team ALS_O (Artgineering, Lama Landscape Architects and Sweco, with Daniël Ost as a subcontractor) has won an Open Oproep tender. The team of designers and the City of Sint-Niklaas aim to create a climate-friendly square by de-paving and greening Belgium’s largest square, initiating a paradigm shift and creating a shared public space. The selection of the ‘de groene markt’ (lit. ‘the green market’) project demonstrates the value of an integrated, forward-looking vision for public space, highlights the agency of the various stakeholders, and once again illustrates the potential of the Open Oproep procedure.
