In 2012, Architectuuratelier Ambiorix won the open competition for the refurbishment and extension of the Provinciaal Instituut Avant (Rivierenhof campus), commissioned by the Province of Antwerp. The former agricultural college is situated on the edge of the Rivierenhof, the largest park in the Antwerp conurbation. The architects have positioned the current art and design school as a link to enhance the park landscape.
In 1923, architect Hippolyte (Pol) Berger built an agricultural and domestic science school for girls in the Rivierenhof, which had only just been purchased by the province. The L-shaped building, in a sober Art Deco style, consists of a reinforced concrete frame. It faces the park (and away from the Turnhoutsebaan) with its façade and entrance featuring a tented roof and bell tower. Around the school, four hectares of gardens and agricultural land were laid out, along with a rose garden and two pavilions for beekeeping and poultry farming.
