‘Touch Your Memory’ is the final-year project that Sylvie Cosyns created as part of her studies at the Faculty of Architecture at KU Leuven-Genk.

Due to its small scale and poetic nature, this is an atypical final-year project. It addresses painful personal experiences with great maturity. Offering people with dementia the opportunity to find their bearings and remain in touch with reality – that is the aim of Sylvie Cosyns’ aesthetic and sensitive approach. In this intimate architectural proposal, the end of life is approached with such humanity and sensitivity that one cannot remain indifferent. Cosyns drew inspiration from historian Frances Yates’ suggestion that Robert Fludd’s memory system was based on the floor plan of the Globe Theatre, designed by his contemporary William Shakespeare. She treats the space of what will become an intensive care room as a memory scene in three acts, in which the sensory décor evokes the memory of a whole lifetime.
