Sustainability in the construction sector is a broad and evolving concept that calls for a comprehensive, well-considered approach. Reynaers Aluminium examines various dimensions of this. After all, it is not a single perspective but many different angles that determine a building’s sustainability. This vision forms the basis of the sustainability strategy “Sustainability. From every angle.”

Within this broad approach, the circular and sustainable value chain is an essential component. After all, anyone wishing to reduce a project’s carbon footprint must look beyond the design alone. Material choices, origin and reuse also play a crucial role. That is why Reynaers Aluminium, together with its partners, is committed to a value chain in which materials and raw materials remain in use for as long as possible and are sourced responsibly from the outset.

Use of low-carbon building elements

The embodied carbon of buildings must be reduced by 50% by 2030. Aluminium profiles account for just 3% of a building’s total embodied CO₂. Joinery is therefore not a decisive factor at building level, but it does merit attention within a broader sustainability approach. That is why Reynaers Aluminium focuses on low-carbon aluminium and low-carbon thermal breaks.

For aluminium, the focus is on the ‘optimal mix’: a balanced proportion of recycled aluminium, combined with new aluminium produced using renewable energy. Today, more than 80% of the range is already low-carbon.

Thermal breaks are also being critically evaluated and systematically converted to materials with a lower environmental impact.

Responsible procurement of materials

When negotiating with suppliers, Reynaers Aluminium always takes the availability of raw materials into account, as sourcing and producing aluminium in a responsible and sustainable manner is essential for people and the planet.

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) ensures that aluminium meets strict global sustainability standards across the entire value chain. Reynaers Aluminium has been a member of ASI since 2024, demonstrating the company’s commitment to building a sustainable and circular value chain.

Together we close the loop: from waste to new profiles

On the path to a circular future, Reynaers Aluminium introduces ReTurn, a closed-loop initiative in which a local recycling system is created in collaboration with partners.

In practical terms, aluminium waste from workshops and construction sites is collected and processed into new low-carbon profiles. The use of packaging materials has also been reviewed, with a focus on reuse and waste reduction.
