Every year since 2015, Brussels has been honouring the women who have contributed – and continue to contribute – to shaping our collective heritage. From 25 to 27 September, during the 8th edition of the Matrimony Days, an initiative of the non-profit organisation L’architecture qui dégenre, you can take part in around thirty free activities at the Bruegel cultural centre and across Brussels!

This year marks the 50th anniversary of a significant financial and feminist victory for Belgium.

To mark this anniversary, the Matrimony Days aim to highlight that behind numerous legal achievements lie women who, often out of the spotlight, fought for rights that should, in fact, have been self-evident. This edition focuses on the struggle for financial autonomy as a common thread that is closely intertwined with access to housing, property and public space. A varied programme links the stories of the past with the challenges of today, creating a dialogue between the past and the present.

The programme includes guided tours, notably a route dedicated to the history of the Belgian feminist struggle, led by Catherine Jacques (PhD in History, lecturer). There are also creative workshops, such as one in which the feminist archives of CARHIF are explored through the creation of badges, led by Lissa Choukrane (artist) and Loraine Furter (graphic designer). Finally, the programme includes participatory talks, such as ‘Tenants of all countries, unite!’, presented by geographer Sarah De Laet and urban economist Charlotte Canard.

In line with the theme of Heritage Days 2026, L’architecture qui dégenre invites you to explore Brussels’ public spaces, both on foot and by bike, over two consecutive weekends. A feminist botanical tour with biologists Claire Baudoux and Sophie Vanderschueren, and a walk through the Laken cemetery each offer a unique perspective on the city. Together, they form an invitation to discover our urban landscapes from an intersectional feminist perspective.
