Even a simple house says a lot about its inhabitants. How much space do you allocate to the hall, the dining room, the sitting area or the kitchen? And above all: what can (and cannot) you do there? With almost imperceptible changes, doorzon interior architects turned the conventional layout of a 1969 bungalow by Fritz Schaffrath in Wondelgem on its head. The strict division between a formal front and a domestic rear has given way to a layout where everything flows together. Exactly as the new residents now live.

The layout chosen by Fritz Schaffrath at the time now seems surprising. The house measures 16 by 9 metres, on a plot of approximately 44 by 18 metres, but along the left-hand side wall (the north side) runs a wide driveway, some 5 metres wide, leading to a garage measuring just under 7 by 7 metres at the rear of the plot. With a front garden as deep as 10 metres, there was little usable outdoor space left to the right of the house (on the south side) or at the rear. The imposing driveway and front garden, which serve no practical purpose, dictated everything here.
