Along Lange Beeldekensstraat in Antwerp, Burobill has created four residential units bordering a public thoroughfare. The homes vary in size, layout and the amount of private outdoor space they offer. By prioritising connection and interaction with the inner lane, both the homes and their surroundings benefit from more air, light and views.
The Autonomous Municipal Company for Real Estate and Urban Projects in Antwerp (AG Vespa) is known for developing affordable housing on ‘complex’ plots within the city. Burobill was appointed from a pool of architects to design the replacement development for what was originally a single building. In a later phase, AG Vespa purchased the adjacent corner building. This naturally created more possibilities, particularly for incorporating the public inner lane running between the two buildings as a fully-fledged element. In the existing situation, the surrounding homes and facilities barely connected with this passageway, nor with the central square.
