One Saturday in 1958, following an air show at Le Bourget, near Paris, a Russian aircraft was returning home. The pilot deviated from his route and flew over Dutch Limburg. From air defence tower 8L3, two volunteers reported the threat.

A network of 276 observation towers was set up in the Netherlands during the 1950s and 1960s to provide early warning of approaching air threats from the Soviet Union. Around half of these observation points were located on existing buildings; the rest were constructed using prefabricated concrete elements. Fewer than twenty of these concrete lattice towers remain today. Some have been repurposed as woodsheds, workshops or dovecotes.
