Marjolaine Gardet, Camille Monti and Charles Preham graduated in 2021 (Faculté d’Architecture La Cambre Horta – ULB). Starting from a material portrait of Ganshoren, they found the theme for their final project. After an initial site visit to the Charles Quint Tennis Club, they followed the figurative trail of orange gravel and ended up at a pile of bricks. Their interest in the material was sparked by the harmony exuded by the tennis club, itself built from brick and concrete mixed with crushed brick.
After visiting various brick factories, they decided to use the knowledge they had gained and their extensive research into the global use of brick in the design of a comprehensive site. A soil survey told them that the tennis club is located in clay soil. The bricks that would be used to construct the new site could therefore be made in situ and begin to tell the story of local industry. Thirty A4 pages in the final project show the process, from the start of extraction to the finished bricks in use. Colourful prints show fragments of the project; axonometric projections and models provide an overall picture. The design consists of a succession of rooms where the brick is used in different ways.
