Architectural platform Terwecoren Verdickt found a grandstand and used it as the starting point for a new martial arts centre. The sports centre houses both the programme and a new public space.

If you explore the area around the Punaruu stadium (Complexe sportif territorial de la Punaruu) using Google Maps, you will end up at a busy roundabout somewhere in Punaauia, in the west of Tahiti (French Polynesia). If you look at an aerial photo, you will see that the existing sports complex from the 1980s is located at the intersection between the city, industrial area and nature, between a road that runs around the island in one long movement and a river that winds its way down from the mountains. If you zoom in, you will see a piece of no man’s land with vans and equipment, scattered outbuildings, containers and, above all, plenty of space for parking. It is also completely fenced off.
