Le Monty, a former cinema occupied for twenty years by the TOF Theatre, has expanded its scope since its renovation. The Karbon team has carefully identified the potential of each element or space to accommodate a wide range of activities. Supported by a motivated local community, Le Monty has become an artistic, cultural and civic hub in the heart of Walloon Brabant, a true place of life, emulation and lifelong learning.

Le Monty is a former cinema that has been occupied since 2001 by TOF Théâtre, a theatre company specialising in contemporary puppetry and street arts, renowned beyond Belgium’s borders for its creations. The inhabitants of Genappe knew the small cinema in the centre until the 1970s. The place is therefore already steeped in popular history, but it has suffered severely from the ravages of time, with its façade wall unstable and the roof structure collapsed. The building had never been renovated when the company bought it with its own funds. When the Karbon team met Alain Moreau, director of TOF Théâtre, this purchase opened up a new world of possibilities and sparked a host of ideas. In the spirit of a new beginning, the theatre’s cultural, social and educational values gave rise to others. The company had big dreams and wanted to host shows, concerts, films and artists in residence, while making the venue a unifying cultural space for citizens to meet, learn and marvel together on a daily basis.
