During the summer months, Z33, the house for contemporary art, design and architecture in Hasselt, is hosting three exhibitions with a common theme: water. They take a look at this natural element as a source of culture, inspiration and life.

In the main exhibition, River of Rebirth, curator Tim Roerig has brought together ancient and contemporary works of art that deal with the role of water in the creation and destruction of the world. The river and the constantly flowing water symbolise the infinity and transience of human life on earth. The works of art tell myths, legends and ideas about water cleansing the soul for rebirth, about gods travelling on the river between earth and the underworld, about the common path that humans and water follow along a river, about the play of light in a tidal movement, about ships surrounded by sea creatures, about pollution, combustion and evaporation in streams, rivers, lakes and seas. The works of Benjamin Verdonck, Roni Horn, Laure Prouvost, Thierry De Cordier and others allow us to feel the overwhelming natural power of water, while moving us with their simplicity. They show the multifaceted meanings of water as a cultural source.
