The Aaltos designed the sanatorium with a kind of bifocal vision, focusing simultaneously on the large and small scales. The building is fully oriented towards the landscape, the dense pine forest and the fresh air. This is evident in the slenderness of the wings, the curving terraces and the sun deck: grand gestures realised in reinforced concrete. At the same time, there is a definite focus on ease of use, the small scale. This is evident in the fineness of the detailing with its curved glass, ceilings, washbasins, fittings, seats, etc.

Colour is also used alongside mainly white façades, giving the hospital a decidedly uplifting appearance. We consider the layering we find here, together with the design pleasure that radiates from it, to be so important for our daily practice, in which we usually imagine ourselves living or working in one of our buildings.
