Plein is the name of the triangular city park in Kortrijk and the streets surrounding it. It is centuries old and is already mentioned on the Ferraris map. Across the axis of Groeningestraat, Plein extends to Korte Leiestraat, which continues towards the banks of the river Leie and also leads to Buda Island via a small bridge. After decades of sustained urban renewal, it has become a beautiful location: it connects to a chain of green spaces such as the Houtmarkt, the garden behind the new Abby Museum, the Messeyne city garden and the Guldenberg park, where the Leieboorden housing project by bOb Van Reeth/AWG is located. The renovation of a social housing complex by a team led by Czvek Rigby and Vers.a will make the neighbourhood even more attractive.
At the tip of Plein, towards the Leie, stands a substantial social housing building, six storeys high, with a footprint of over 49 by 15.5 metres. It dates from the 1970s, as evidenced by the prominent concrete cornices marking each floor, the small concrete balconies and the greenish glazed brickwork of the façade. On the long east side, a wide, raised terrace above the underground car park acts as a buffer against the hustle and bustle of ‘t Fort primary school on the other side of the street. On the west side, a sloping strip of green forms a gentle transition to the street. At both the north and south ends are entrances and exits to the underground car park, slightly obscured by trees and shrubs.
