Under the eloquent title Nature of Hope, the 11th edition of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) will take place this summer. With a major exhibition at the Nieuwe Instituut, the IABR highlights the multiplicity of the relationship between architecture and nature, illustrating it with more than 80 inspiring projects.
Architecture biennials and triennials are the perfect places for ideas to bubble up, for designers to present innovative work, and for people to exchange ideas and critically question architecture. While past biennials often focused on introducing new architectural languages, today they establish a link between design missions and climate transition. Think of Rotor’s Behind the Green Door (Oslo, 2013), Terra (Lisbon, 2022) or It’s About Time (Rotterdam, 2022), the latest edition of the IABR. Nature of Hope is part of this evolution. The biennial takes the spatial implications of major design projects as its starting point and challenges designers to take action.
