After only three years of “exploratory work”, the Wallonia-Brussels Cultural Institute of Architecture (ICA-WB) has succeeded in establishing itself as a leading operator in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. Hosted and supported by existing structures, this young nomadic institution has deployed resources, both large and small, that have succeeded in reaching a very wide audience, gradually awakening an architectural and landscape culture through the built environment through meetings, exhibitions and other events.
Through the “Temps d’archi” initiatives, the cities of Namur, Tournai and Charleroi have been periodically involved. For Temps d’archi#5, scheduled to take place in Liège and planned for the summer of 2021, it was unthinkable not to reflect on the role of architecture in flooding and the illusory nature of human control in flood management. Embracing the challenge of providing a forward-looking and encouraging perspective, the ICA-WB dares to ask the question: is it possible to reconcile the river and its inhabitants? Is it possible to relearn how to live with the fluctuations of the Meuse, Ourthe or Vesdre rivers, knowing the risks they pose?
