Hirata Akihisa is a young Japanese architect, who graduated from the University of Tokyo. He then worked for almost eight years for Toyo Ito, among others on the pavilion for Bruges (2002), the competition for the Ghent Music Forum (2004) and the Tod’s store in Tokyo (2004). In 2005 he established his own architect’s firm working on such projects as the Bloomberg Pavilion in the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Arts or the One Roof building in Niigata. On the international scene he earned a reputation for himself with the Foam Form installation in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the Tangle Table for Art Basel and with his contribution to the Japanese pavilion at the most recent architecture biennial in Venice, which received a prestigious Golden Lion.
Akihisa is passionate about mathematics and nature, developing an organic architecture in formal terms as well as in the way he questions the eco-systemic integration of inherited and emerging life forms. He has coined the concept of ‘tangling’ to describe his approach.

Hirata Akihisa’s lecture is an initiative of Grand-Hornu Images in the framework of the exhibition dedicated to his work, which will run from 21 April until 18 August. A ticket to the lecture also entitles you to free admission to the exhibition.
