The monographic exhibition Dispositions, devoted to the work of the Brussels-based architectural firm AgwA, presented last year at the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Bozar) in Brussels, will be on display at the Architektur Galerie in Berlin from 5 July to 17 August.
AgwA was founded in Brussels between 2003 and 2006 by Harold Fallon, Benoît Vandenbulcke and Raphaël Cornelis (until 2008). Benoît Burquel joined them in 2017, followed by Hélène Joos and Nicky Vancaudenberg in 2023. They design simple, precise and functional architecture that allows users to appropriate the building and adapt it over time. The added value of AgwA’s architecture is always a social commitment to current social and spatial emergencies, which manifests itself on a contextual, structural, economic and ecological level.
The exhibition highlights the multiple facets of the concept of ‘disposition’ in AgwA’s work through three projects carried out in Belgium: CHAPEX; the renovation of the Palais des Expositions in Charleroi, in collaboration with jdviv (Jan De Vylder and Inge Vinck); ECAM; the transformation of a former engineering school in Saint-Gilles; and SERAING; a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists in Seraing that also serves as a public space and reconnects two neighbourhoods and the railway station. These projects are presented in the exhibition through various media and offer an insight into AgwA’s architectural thinking and creative process. An interview with the architects, drawings, models and photos illustrate their approach and reflect the contemporary Belgian architectural landscape – its roughness and playful character. The exhibition prompts reflection on the social and cultural relevance of their architecture.
The Dispositions exhibition is part of a series of monographic exhibitions on Belgian architectural firms organised by A Architecture in Belgium in collaboration with Bozar since 2019.
