In Genk, the city wants to develop a master plan for the redevelopment of the Kolderbos residential area in consultation with residents. A multidisciplinary team led by Metapolis came up with a way to do this by changing the street pattern, densifying with new homes and at the same time reducing hard surfaces and increasing greenery.

Kolderbos is a neighbourhood covering almost 64 hectares, just south of the centre of Genk. Between 1964 and 1975, more than a thousand social housing units were built there. These included high-rise buildings, four-storey apartment blocks, but also bungalows and single-family homes. The latter are now mainly privately owned. Today, the neighbourhood has 1,210 dwellings with approximately 2,865 inhabitants. Eight hundred homes are social rental properties owned by the housing association Nieuw Dak. The neighbourhood infrastructure, roads, footpaths, car parks and green spaces have already been renovated in several phases in recent years, and Nieuw Dak has been renovating its properties for some time.
