By placing the programme on an orthonormal grid, sandwiched between two thin concrete slabs, Central’s project for this vocational school in Templeuve appears simple and efficient at first glance. The rationality that permeates the project not only serves a strategic purpose, but also has aesthetic value, creating room for surprise.
In 2017, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation organised a series of open competitions. By participating in these competitions, young architectural firms were given the opportunity to acquire public contracts. The downside, however, was the intense competition that these unpaid designs entailed. The first strategic decision was already taken during the design phase of the Templeuve project: V, Central, AHA and Nord decided to join forces and participate as a collective in as many competitions as there were firms in the collective. Their proposal for the vocational school in Templeuve, developed mainly by Central, was ultimately awarded the contract.
