Bauclub chose The Graph Paper Building, created in 1950 by artist Saul Steinberg, as a reference. The work took aim at the architectural and construction landscape of the time. The contours of a building, drawn on graph paper, are revealed by the figures and houses drawn around them in ink. “The way in which ordinary paper becomes a building when given a new context is in line with our approach to architecture. We are very sensitive to ordinary elements that, through a simple reinterpretation, prove to be relevant, as readymades.”
“The approach applied here attempts to bring the element to life through targeted and balanced interventions within an existing situation – a spatial, living, social context. It offers a new poetic view of what already exists, to do more with less. Modest interventions redefine the use, purpose or function of a place. Existing and/or new elements are literally placed side by side; a game that creates a new narrative in a playful way and with seemingly naive gestures. The context becomes a laboratory, a playground, where we are both witnesses and players in an encounter between different space and time parameters. It is then up to us to contribute with our own approach to this new story that is taking shape around a whole.”
