Global warming, geopolitical tensions and the recent oil crisis raise crucial questions about energy sources and emphasise the importance of architecture in public and political debate. Architecture Curating Practice invites Louise Morin to make a counterproposal during her residency #001 Coating.
In her proposal, Morin decides not to warm up our spaces, but our bodies. I experience this first-hand when I visit et al. 1 in the Marolles district of Brussels. I soon come into physical contact with her textile objects, which are scattered throughout the space. What is striking is that they are all constructed from the same T-shaped element and can change in form and use in a modular way; some hang up, others appear as tablecloths and still others lie on the floor. It is the latter that I touch when curator Roxane Le Grelle invites me to lie down on the floor, which changes my relationship to the space and to the other person. There I meet Kris De Decker, who tells me about his publication Heating People, not Spaces. Louise was inspired by his work, but also by numerous cultures, including Flemish culture with its rich textile history. 1 et al. is an ‘architect-run space’ dedicated to architecture, founded by Architecture Curating Practice in June 2023. It provides a platform for urgent issues and social questions within the architectural discipline through various formats such as residencies, discussions, exhibitions, performances, workshops or lectures. Louise Morin’s work will be on display from March to May 2024.
