In Herseaux, the Philippe Geluck School, designed by A Practice, transforms a disparate school park into a coherent and easily understood site. Starting from research into a reproducible model, the project has been successfully implemented in a unique way, adapted to a specific existing context.
The Geluck School project is part of a history that goes far beyond it. In the 1960s and 1970s, Belgium, faced with population growth, urgently built a large number of schools in the form of lightweight pavilions. Their poor construction and architectural qualities, justified by their temporary nature, have not prevented them from remaining in use to this day. In 2013, the Architecture Unit of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB) tackled the dilapidated state of the school buildings and launched two pilot projects, in Herseaux and La Louvière, accompanied by an R&D mission.
